Ronan Keating with special guests Tina Arena and Damien Leith
Rochford Wines
Sunday, January 31, 2010

What a day it was yesterday in unpredictable Melbourne! We had scorching heat, rain, thunder and lightning. But we didn’t care, we just enjoyed the performances at Rochford Wines.

The support artists before Ronan Keating were Damien Leith and Tina Arena. Unfortunately for Damien he performed at the hottest part of the day and even when he encourage the crowd to get involved, we frankly couldn’t care any less. It was expected to reach 37 degrees and it certainly felt like it! The Idol winner performed songs from his latest album Remembering June and two covers including John Devner's Annie Song and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah which Damien did perfectly.

The beautiful Tina Arena
When Tina Arena came onstage the heavens opened. For about half an hour dark clouds were looming and lightning strikes were in the distance. When the heavens finally opened everyone remained in their seats wearing ponchos. Tina said that’s what she loves being home because “Everything goes.”

Tina featured songs from her albums Songs Of Love and Loss #1 and #2 which included The Look Of Love, To Sir With Love, Every Breath You Take, Only Wanna Be With You and Only Women Bleed. Then Tina flashbacked to the 90’s (and to my teenage years) and did a beautiful version of Wasn’t It Good from her 1997 album In Deep with her string section then her hits Burn For Me and Now I Can Dance. As the rain poured, Tina was adamit to finish her set so she kept laughing at us with our ponchos, rocking out. She finished her set with a rockin’ Blondie cover Call Me then with her biggest hit Chains.

Ronan Keating loving the soaked crowd

Remarkably when Ronan came out the rain stopped, well for a while anyway. He said it was “really special” to be in Melbourne after their three week Australian tour. He looked mighty fine dressed in a black waistcoat with a white shirt and black leather pants. He and his huge band did songs from all his solo catalogue including tracks from his latest album Stay and last year’s release Songs For My Mum. They included:

Two Friends
Love What We Do
Way You Make Me Feel (written by Bryan Adams)
If Tomorrow Never Comes
Time After Time
Stay
Homeward Bound
If You Love Me
The Last Thing On My Mind (with Tina Arena)
Your Song
We Got Tonight
When You Say Nothing At All
Lovin Each Day
Life’s A Rollercoaster
Beds Are Burning

The rain didn’t hold off for long but no-one cared. At one point Ronan introduced a song called In The Summertime by saying he wrote it thinking about the Australian summer. We all laughed!

After surprising us with doing a bloody fantastic version of Midnight Oil’s Beds Are Burning Ronan announced he with Boyzone will be back later in the year doing concerts.

Ronan you can come back anytime!

Bon Jovi Give Back

Richie & Jon doing what they do best
After watching Bon Jovi’s latest live DVD Live At Maddison Square and didn’t like what I heard and saw, I’m pleased to say that Jon’s voice seems to be back in shape.

Superman Tonight is Bon Jovi’s second single taken from their latest album The Circle and it happens to be my favourite track on the album. It was released in America on January 25, but as yet there is no release date for Australia.

I’m also impressed about the guys raising awareness for volunteers. If you watch the official video for Superman Tonight at http://www.bonjovi.de/ you’ll see how volunteers are shown as to give them recognition. Apparently the money raised from sales for Superman Tonight in America go to charities, which is always a good thing.

Here’s a live performance of Superman Tonight on America’s Today Show. The boys are sounding mighty fine.

I just am digging this song! It sums up what every girl feels like when her heart has been stomped on. It’s the ultimate revenge to sound terribly sweet but say those two words!

Go Lily!

Placebo
Placebo are back with a new single and album. The first single is called Bright Lights and it definitely shows how Placebo have matured.

The video is really smart! It starts with the band being in the dark but as the video goes on, the band are lit in brighter surroundings until they are in the sunlight

Concerts, concerts and more concerts

December 30th 2009 04:44
I have trying to pinpoint some of the personal music highlights of 2009. There are too many to mention but here are a few that come to mind.

Human Nature with Mum and I in Vegas
As it pains me to say this but seeing Human Nature in Vegas earlier this year was something to remember! I think it was the fact that they’re Aussies just made it special. Seeing the audience slowly warm to these four white guys singing Motown was great

A Note to You

December 23rd 2009 06:27
thank you, teddy
This year has been a great, challenging, fun, hard, rewarding, amazing year with doing Gigs ‘n Reviews. Finally I am able to tell people that I’m doing what I’ve wanted to do since high school; and that is write about music.

I feel extremely honoured when artists/bands give me feedback after reviewing them. Their feedback makes all the preparation, research and writing worthwhile. From the bottom of my heart I thank you those who have supported and had faith in me! Thanks for joining Gigs 'n Reviews on Myspace

Spaceship Days

Since doing this feature I have come across some fantastic artists and bands who are making damn good music without the support from a labels. The indie movement seems to be taking off all over the world
