Bon Jovi Do Full Circle

November 23rd 2009 09:22

The Circle
Bon Jovi, 2009

Bon Jovi the circle
A s my regular readers know I’ve been a Jovi fan for many years, but been disappointed with their last two albums. I am so wrapped to be able to write a positive review on their latest album The Circle.

The first track is the crank worthy single We Weren’t Meant To Follow. As I’ve describe it before, it’s a typical Jovi athem that gets your blood pumping! This song will be a Jovi classic for sure.

Jon, Richie, Tico, Dave and Hugh have gone back to their roots, maybe doing the full circle in their careers. The 80’s workclass conscious Bon Jovi have reappeared in many of the tracks on The Circle like Work For The Working Man, inspired by the global financial crisis.

Superman Tonight is one of the different sounding tracks on The Circle. It’s has a Snow Patrol urgency to it! I can’t get Thorn In My Side out of my head; it’s so catchy!

As Jon and Richie get closer to 50, their attitudes towards life are more apparent on The Circle almost to the point of you wanting to say “OK we get it, appreciate life!” The Circle is also very more spiritual than their other ten studio albums, Live Before You Die is an example of this.
Love's the Only Rule has some great verses, though the chorus is a letdown though. It’s not a Bon Jovi album without the whoa-whoa electric sound appearing at one stage. Even though it’s only for a few seconds it’s there at the beginning of Happy Now.

The Circle finishes with Learn to Love; a ballad about making peace with past mistakes, again showing not only maturity but happiness.

The Circle gets four out of five frangipanis! Jovi, keep Rockin!

Project Blues Saturday Suffering Fools
Diesel
2009

As much as I love Diesel, I had listened to previews of some tracks off Project Blues Saturday Suffering Fools and wasn’t too sure about them. However on Saturday when I listened to the whole album (cranked up of course), I loved it!

diesel, Saturday suffering fools, blues
Saturday Suffering Fools kicks off with a very relevant track called The First Time I Met The Blues. It has a classic sound and you’re transported to a dark smoky club. Then you’re thrusted into a 50’s rock ‘n roll dance track called My Baby Likes To Boogaloo. This is one cool track!

At his Four Corners gig at Crown last year (reviewed on www.gigsnreviews.com) we were introduced to the banjo on the track Walkin' The Blues. On Project Blues Saturday Suffering Fools this track features a real country, knee-slapping beat that you’d never expect to hear from Diesel.

I’m a sucker for steel guitar and bluesy dirty tunes and Project Blues Saturday Suffering Fools has plenty so when hearing Don't Throw Your Love On Me So Strong I gasped. Diesel is a natural singing the blues and makes his guitar sing the blues as well. Tear Out The Man and It Hurts Me Too are real sad blues tracks where Diesel puts empathy into his vocals.

Diesel brought family onboard to heavily feature on Project Blues Saturday Suffering Fools. His Dad on tenor and brothers Mike and Brian on baritone sax and trombone. These instruments compliment Diesel’s guitar riffs, actually being in-synch with each other. Stoopid Fool is a good example of this.

Whiskey And Weed is another cool-sounding song with a real mixture of sounds including the versatile banjo. I really like Them Changes and it’s a song with a current sound.

The only track I’m confused about as to why it’s on Project Blues Saturday Suffering Fools is Sweet Emotion, an Aerosmith cover. Still scratching my head about where the blues is in this song.

Project Blues Saturday Suffering Fools is a great album to put on a Saturday afternoon while you’re bopping around the house. I can’t wait to see Diesel with his band playing tracks off Saturday Suffering Fools at The Palms in October.

I give Project Blues Saturday Suffering Fools five out of five frangipanis.

Cradlesong, An Album With Heart

Cradlesong
Rob Thomas

Rob Thomas, Cradlesong, Her Diamonds
Rob Thomas is one of the best songwriters this generation has! Since Matchbox Twenty’s debut album Yourself Or Someone Like You which was released in 1996, I have been in love with Rob’s songwriting capabilities ever since. He just has the knack to write amazing lyrics out of ordinary situations.

Rob released his second solo album Cradlesong last week. It has fourteenth tracks all having different genres attached to them, dabbling in rock, pop and country; being inspired by Nashville where the album was recorded.

The first single Her Diamonds begins the album with lyrics that form great imagery. When I first heard it on the radio the lyrics really stood out as sympatric.

In a recent interview Rob said he wanted to make an album that sounded like a radio station in the 80’s. He didn’t want to stick to one particular genre and was inspired by artists like Peter Gabriel, Fleetwood Mac, Willie Nelson and James Taylor.

The standout tracks on Cradlesong include a poppy, catchy tune called Give Me The Meltdown, Someday; a ballad with a universal message, Mockingbird; a fast-paced song about a broken relationships with an eighties sounding keyboard, the catchy Hard On You, a rocky Still Ain’t Over You; a definitely possible single, Snowblind; another song that radio would love, Getting Late; a real Nashville-influenced ballad and my favourite track the beautiful lullaby-like song Cradlesong.

Cradlesong reflects Rob’s maturity as a thirtysomething guy. The angst we have heard in the past has now been replaced with heart and joy as a married man of almost ten years.

I give Cradlesong four and an half out of five frangipanis.

Below is the video of Her Diamonds:
