Bryan Adams - 11

Bryan Adams - 11

For lots of people especially if you’re under fifty Bryan Adams has no doubt made an imprint on your music history. Whether he supplied your wedding song with Everything I Do I Do For You or the song reminding of you of your first love. This is of course Summer Of `69!

In the late 90’s/early 00’s he turned to more of an electronic sound. Unfortunately his 2005 more rock sounding album Room Service didn’t have a great success and produced no stand-out tracks.

In 2008 Bryan Adams is celebrating thirty years in the music business by releasing his eleventh album, simply titled 11. Bryan and his long-time band members (Keith Scott on vocals and guitar, Mickey Curry on drums, Norm Fisher on bass and Gary Briet on keyboards) have returned to rock.

Unfortunately it’s soft rock, full of clichés and romanticism. Most tracks are not grabby at all. The opening track Tonight We Have The Stars is good storytelling and you can just imagine driving to somewhere to celebrate an achievement or milestone.

The first four tracks are probably the best. The album then lacks hooks, riffs, tunes that you can’t stop humming to…basically the songs lack what that makes a good track! However, the bonus track Way Of The World is the song boasting with most potential.

But if you are looking for a CD to put on in the background, or if you have a driving trip coming up Bryan Adams’ 11 could be the perfect album for you.

Wrong Place, Wrong Time... David Franj
Wrong Place, Wrong Time... David Franj

In recent times finding a talented singer/songwriter who actually crafts stories into their lyrics is rare. In 2002 I was sitting at my desk, getting ready to go out to the kitchen table when suddenly I was stopped in my tracks by a song that came on the radio. It was Oxygen and I remember eagerly waiting to hear who the artist was. The dj announced it was a new Melbourne singer/songwriter David Franj. I was blown away with David’s sound and heartfelt lyrics.

In March 2003 David’s debut album Wrong Place, Wrong Time was released. It produced three Top 40 hits; Oxygen, God Only Knows and Never Be Amazing and these were soon added to national radio playlists. This album became one of my favourites to listen to. Wrong Place, Wrong Time is an album you can play whatever mood you might be in; you can easily relate to David’s stories of love and loss.

You can purchase Wrong Place, Wrong Time from either from one of these sites:

This Left Feels Right

Bon Jovi

As a massive Bon Jovi fan, I have accepted and loved everything that the band has delivered. However, their latest offering This Left Feels Right (“a Greatest Hits with a twist” according to BonJovi.com), goes against the band’s deserving definition of one of the world’s best rock bands.

When you think of Bon Jovi you automatically think of big guitars, loud drums and going off at their concerts. You think of Jon seducing his female fans with a beautiful ballad, while his male fans are wishing they could be like him. These fantasies are typical when you listen to Bon Jovi’s catalogue of hits. Unfortunately This Left Feel Right doesn’t leave much room for fantasies, but what did they expect when they only took fifteen days to record the album?

You could say that they have recorded the perfect dinner party CD. Jon, Richie, David, Tico and Hugh have gone down the experimental path of striping down their absolute classics and regurgitating them so you hardly recognize your beloved favorites.

The athem It’s My Life is one of the better rehashed songs on the CD. Instead of a fist-pumping rock song with lots of noise, the guys have forgotten to record guitars, drums and that wa-wa-wo voice instrument. Instead they have slowed the perfect kick-ass song right down and just gone with an orchestra arrangement.

This Left Feels Right is a spin-off off their 1994 best of release Crossroads, and is a huge disappointment to this Jovi fan.
