Coathanger Antennae
Diesel
Coathanger Antennae is Diesel’s latest studio album containing thirteen well-crafted songs. It’s no secret that Diesel enjoys experimentation and on Coathanger Antennae he dabbles into country, funk, reggae, orchestral and blues to produce an addictive album.
Diesel doesn’t just write lyrics to songs, he is the composer! Crazy Town is the first single off Coathanger Antennae and has quickly become a radio hit. The idea of the strings section in Crazy Town came to Diesel when he was fiddling with a program on his laptop. This proves how talented and thorough he is with every aspect of his music. On the album Diesel plays the guitar, cello, mandolin, lap steel and piano… just to name a few.
Diesel and his band; Richie Vez on backing vocals, bass and percussion and Lee Maloney on drums and percussion capture the live sound. In parts the music is so raw, it sounds like the band are playing in your room. As a testament to Diesel’s producing, every instrument is very clear and the album sounds like a live recording.
Lyrically Coathanger Antennae is far more personal than previous albums. Saviour and I Do are heart-felt and beautifully written – the music isn’t over-the-top, instead Diesel uses a string section to enhance the romanticism of their lyrics.
Diesel gets political with the catchy, soulful track Positive which Diesel tells his listeners that even if you feel hopeless in the world, you can still have the power to change it. Coathanger Antennae ends with Steal My Sunshine which has a real 60’s rock, fun feel to it! After listening to Steal My Sunshine you’re ready to put on the album again.
Coathanger Antennae is another achievement in Diesel’s career. He says he doesn’t know what he’s doing when recording an album, even though Coathanger Antennae is his eighth studio album. Diesel, take it from this fan – you do!
