Billy Ocean is 59, but don’t assume he’s over it! Last night he proved to the Melbourne crowd that he’s back and you could say his voice is better than ever.
He was dressed in a light grey suit and all night he swooned his crowd (especially his female fans) with his moves and warm and witty personality. He even blew kisses to particular people (again women) and high-fived people in the front row throughout the evening.
He and his eight or nine piece band started the night off with the 1976 hit Love Really Hurts Without You. He immediately thanked the crowd for bringing him and his band to Australia. They’re doing three shows; Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne. This is the first time Billy has toured Downunder.
As well as doing his huge and quite impressive catalogue of hits such as Are You Ready/Stay The Night, Nights (Feel Like Gettin’ Down), There’ll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry) and Love Is Forever, he played an acoustic set of songs from his latest album Because I Said So, which he recorded at his home studio without all this new technology. His new stuff sounded really good and had that Jamaican positivity to it.
His lovesong Suddenly got everyone singing, then Billy got everyone dancing with Loverboy and the memorable 80’s hit Get Into My Car. When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going received the biggest response from the crowd who were on their feet by this point.
With his backing singers (one was his daughter) they sang Love Lift Us Up Where We Belong arcapelo style which just highlighted Billy’s powerful voice.
They ended the night with Caribbean Queen and again Billy thanked the crowd.
With Billy’s warm personality, it was a great night.
