Diesel, guitar, casino
Diesel @ The Palms, 23/10/09
Last night Diesel and his band did the first of two shows at The Palms as part of the Hits and Blues Tour. As you know I’ve seen Diesel perform so many times but every time he manages to blow me away with his new direction and sound.

The night started around 8:30 and same as last year’s Palms performance there was no support and the show didn’t end until 11:30. Diesel came out dressed in a grey suit and his long-time bass player looked the part in a black hat. The stage became smokey like how a blues club traditionally is.

The first set was dedicated to the blues. Diesel started off with My Baby Likes To Boogaloo introducing us to how good sax and guitar can sound together. Then they launched into a Diesel original Stoopid Fool. He rewinded back time with tracks from his first blues album (with Chris Wilson) Short Cool Ones playing many tracks like My Babe and Can’t Stand the Rain.

The banjo made a big appearance in Walkin The Blues and it’s always amazing how Diesel invents new uses for his instruments; who would have ever thought the banjo could be used as a drum?

Being an Ebay queen myself, I could sympathise when Diesel told us how he had bought a guitar from Ebay for only $75! The guitar may be only little but it definitely punches out a big steel guitar sound! Spoonful sounded awesome with this little guitar.

Even going way back twenty years Diesel and band did songs from his Johnny Diesel and The Injectors days. Diesel revealed he pitched Since I Fell For You from his Dad’s collection.

The second set was all his hits from Hepfedelity to Days Like These, bringing a new life and a totally foreign sound to some songs. He dusted off Parisiemme Motel and added a country sound to what was a rock tune. The audience began to get louder as it got deeper into the second set with hits like All Come Together, Never Miss Your Water, Don’t Need Love, Love Junk and Come To Me. Actually Come To Me received some punk treatment. It bought a smile to everyone in the band.

As part of 3the encore Diesel paid tribute to the great Jimi Hendrix by doing Wind Cries Mary. This was surreal. Diesel ended the night with saying, “You’ve been a fucking great audience, thank you!”
