It shined, it poured but we enjoyed A Day On The Green

What a day it was yesterday in unpredictable Melbourne! We had scorching heat, rain, thunder and lightning. But we didn’t care, we just enjoyed the performances at Rochford Wines.
The support artists before Ronan Keating were Damien Leith and Tina Arena. Unfortunately for Damien he performed at the hottest part of the day and even when he encourage the crowd to get involved, we frankly couldn’t care any less. It was expected to reach 37 degrees and it certainly felt like it! The Idol winner performed songs from his latest album Remembering June and two covers including John Devner's Annie Song and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah which Damien did perfectly.
When Tina Arena came onstage the heavens opened. For about half an hour dark clouds were looming and lightning strikes were in the distance. When the heavens finally opened everyone remained in their seats wearing ponchos. Tina said that’s what she loves being home because “Everything goes.”
Tina featured songs from her albums Songs Of Love and Loss #1 and #2 which included The Look Of Love, To Sir With Love, Every Breath You Take, Only Wanna Be With You and Only Women Bleed. Then Tina flashbacked to the 90’s (and to my teenage years) and did a beautiful version of Wasn’t It Good from her 1997 album In Deep with her string section then her hits Burn For Me and Now I Can Dance. As the rain poured, Tina was adamit to finish her set so she kept laughing at us with our ponchos, rocking out. She finished her set with a rockin’ Blondie cover Call Me then with her biggest hit Chains.
Remarkably when Ronan came out the rain stopped, well for a while anyway. He said it was “really special” to be in Melbourne after their three week Australian tour. He looked mighty fine dressed in a black waistcoat with a white shirt and black leather pants. He and his huge band did songs from all his solo catalogue including tracks from his latest album Stay and last year’s release Songs For My Mum. They included:
Two Friends
Love What We Do
Way You Make Me Feel (written by Bryan Adams)
If Tomorrow Never Comes
Time After Time
Stay
Homeward Bound
If You Love Me
The Last Thing On My Mind (with Tina Arena)
Your Song
We Got Tonight
When You Say Nothing At All
Lovin Each Day
Life’s A Rollercoaster
Beds Are Burning
The rain didn’t hold off for long but no-one cared. At one point Ronan introduced a song called In The Summertime by saying he wrote it thinking about the Australian summer. We all laughed!
After surprising us with doing a bloody fantastic version of Midnight Oil’s Beds Are Burning Ronan announced he with Boyzone will be back later in the year doing concerts.
Ronan you can come back anytime!
