Perfect Afternoon at Rochford Wines

March 30th 2009 09:49
Rochford Wines, Yarra Valley.
Saturday, March 28th 2009

It was perfect weather to be at Rochford Wines having our ears spoilt with fine Aussie artists from 3:30pm to 10:30pm. The line-up was The Badloves, Ross Wilson, Kasey Chambers (with Shane Nicholson) and the legendary Jimmy Barnes.

Badloves
The Badloves
Day On The Green When I read The Badloves were on the bill I couldn’t wait to see them perform live again as they were one of my favourite bands during the 90’s. On Saturday they sounded just as good I recalled; they still have that lounge sound that is unique to this day. Consisting of the original band members Michael Spiby, Jak Housden, Tony Featherstone and John Favaro. The Badloves did set showcasing some of their hits including I Remember, Lost, Green Limousine and Memphis. Housden the guitarist showed why he’s one of the best Australian guitarists during Yesterday’s Gone. He went off! I loved hearing Sugar Daddy live again; this song sounded so good live.

Ross Wilson, Daddy Cool
Ross Wilson
Even though Ross Wilson isn’t from my era, I still appreciate the fact he’s an Australian icon. My Mum, Dad and Aunty definitely enjoyed his set. He and his band performed Come Back Again, Bed Of Nails, a really different version of Bom Bom, Come Said The Boy, Cruel World and the “Unofficial national athem” and the crowd of 4,000 to 5,000 people got out of their chairs and danced.

Kasey Chambers

Our family isn’t definitely not into country and western, but we enjoyed Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicolson’s set (who are husband and wife). They featured songs off their first joint album called Rattlin’ Bones and stuff off their past solo albums. We loved Kasey’s cute personality as she doesn’t take anything seriously and enjoys having a joke or two. She revealed that she and Shane write separately and that Shane didn’t speak to her after one of her songs was chosen for the first single. She also revealed that Ross Wilson and Jimmy Barnes were drinking honey and lemon and she was the only one drinking alcohol. She went on to poke fun at her Dad who is in their band.

Jimmy Barnes

Barnesy and his fantastic band came onstage at 8:50pm and didn’t leave until 10:30pm; meanwhile the crowd was on their feet for all that time. His band had his daughters on backing vocals and his son on percussion. He had an awesome guitarist that I wish I knew his name of. His set began with Wheels In Motion, the set with full of hits from the Chisel days and after. These songs included Die To Be With You Tonight, Lover Lover, Rising Sun, On Your Side, Lay Down Your Guns, Too Much Ain’t Enough, Choir Girl, Resurrection Shuffle, Cheap Wine, Ride The Night Away, Nothing I Want, Working Class Man, When The War Is Over and songs from his latest album Out Of The Blue.

He invited Kasey and Shane to come back onstage taking it in turns singing with Jimmy including the classics Khe Sahn and Flame Trees. Then The Badloves joined Jimmy onstage to sing The Weight, and then Ross Wilson sang Shake, Rattle ‘n Roll with Barnesy featuring Jak Housden from The Badloves on guitar.

Jimmy urged the crowd to buy his iTunes album Live At the Enmore to help the bushfire victims as all the proceeds go to the appeal.

The afternoon of music ended with one of Chisel’s loudest hits Goodbye (Goodbye Astrid) and Barnesy sounded better than ever. We can’t stop raving about Saturday, especially Barnesy and his band.
