Gigs n Reviews -

Gigs ‘n Reviews’ Weekly Myspace Discovery

July 24th 2009 01:56
Interview with Get Behind Vic Bands

When Get Behind Vic Bands joined Gigs ‘n Reviews’ Myspace, it was quite apparent that these people were passionate about supporting unsigned Victorian bands. So I decided to have a chat with its creator Sarah Cook and later assistant Eddie Reiss.

1. Why did you start Get Behind Vic Bands?

Sarah started up GBVB (Get Behind Vic Bands) as a small way of trying to get smaller Victorian bands recognized with a Myspace page. She got the idea from another page called Get Behind Aussie Bands and got permission to branch off. But having to deal with the work load of year 12 she handed it to joint custody with myself (Eddie). I then jumped on the site with full force, with both of our ideas for the future. We both just love the local scene and the bands forming locally.

2. How have you seen the music industry change over the years?

Only having the page up from December 2008, nothing drastic! But in the short time we have seen many bands break up and lose members, but also see old members and new faces develop into many new better bands!

3. Is the computer-age good or bad for music?

It can be seen in different lights. Sure its way too easy to download all the music from your favourite bands but if it wasn't for the internet, advertising yourselves and getting noticed would be far harder and we wouldn't even exist!

4. How do you fund yourselves to support acts?

Right now I have funded everything from my own pockets. But recently with all the people we have had supporting us have raised $350 in donations to help release a compilation CD we will be releasing with tracks from 20 Vic bands!

5. Have you received any support from radio stations?

No we haven't had any support from local radio stations. But we have looked into SYN.fm and what they do there.

6. There’s always been something unique about Victorian artists and bands. What do you think it is?

Victorian artists seem to come in masses! There are so many out there! But they are all very passionate and dedicated to what they do.

7. What lies ahead for Get Behind Vic Bands?

We are planning on releasing our compilation CD very soon! It will be followed by a Melbourne mini tour with all the bands involved playing shows all over Vic to help get them out there! Very excited for that. Also we are interviewing / holding a photo shoot for Dallas Green of Alexisonfire/City And Colour when they come down early next year.

If you want to check out Get Behind Vic Bands on Myspace, head to Get Behind Vic Bands

Thank you to Sarah and Eddie for their time doing this interview.
