Drugs In Vegas
Let’s kick of 2010 with an interview with the delightful Adam Halliwell from Drugs In Vegas.
But first here are some facts about the band.
Drugs In Vegas are a five member Melbourne band. They’re an extremely hard-working group, putting out their debut EP All This And More last year and currently taking residency at The Espy in St Kilda in January.
Drugs In Vegas create music to take in. Their tracks on Myspace are rocky but poetic. You hear that there has been a lot of thought put in the music that they have created. I recommend you take a listen to their four tracks on their Myspace.
Adam kindly answered my call out on Gigs ‘n Reviews Myspace
to artists/bands to be interviewed. So sit back (in air-con if you’re in the southern states of Australia) and enjoy this interview!
1. How did you come up with the name Drugs In Vegas? Have you ever been to Sin City?
Cale and Mick came up with the name in 15 minutes recess back in year 10. Cale liked the band 'Bullet Train to Vegas' and Mick wanted to be called 'The Cuban Druglords'...we hated that name....so we put the two together and came up with Drugs In Vegas and No we have never been to Sin City - would be great though.
2. Was your debut EP All This And More recorded here in Melbourne?
It was recorded at Basin Studios in The Basin. So, more over the Dandenong Ranges Area. We recorded it with Matt D'Arcy who is our producer. He's great!
3. Your track Cemeteries And Seagulls is an epic track going for 8:21 minutes. Did you always intend it to be such a lengthy track?
Not initially. This track was always going to be lengthy. Mick had heaps of lyrics for this song. The song is a fairly slow paced and driving, so I suppose it really clocks up the minutes. This is a track we still love to play today.
We just write songs and don't really plan on making them short or long. You can tell whether the story can be told in a matter of a few minutes. Sometimes it just needs to be explained more deeply, through the music and lyrics.
4. Are you enjoying your Espy stint?
We have played the Espy a few times. We love it. One of the best venues in Melbourne. We are going to have a heap of fun. So everyone should come down to it on the 14th, 21st and 28th of January in the Basement. Free Entry also.
5. Will you be doing gigs in other cities?
We are planning on heading to Sydney around the March/April period. We have nothing set in stone yet. But, those shows should be up and running soon. So keep your eyes and ears open!!
6. What is the background to Your Restraining Orders?
It's about a string of phone calls happening very late one night in the weeks following a break up. It's kind of about irrationality, because after being told to stay away and not call her she was calling. So it's about staying rational by not answering the phone - which was the original 'order'.
7. What are the plans for 2010?
In 2010 we will record and release our next EP, tour east coast and hopefully get some good support shows and festivals in summer.
Thanks very much Adam for being such a great interviewee. I wish Drugs In Vegas all the best with their future.
