Skipping Girl Vinegar
Skipping Girl Vinegar have to be commended. They’re a Melbourne band that make really good music that have so many different sounds, but their music is not weird at all. They have catchy melodies and use out-of-the-ordinary instruments that you wouldn’t normally associate with rock/alternative/pop music.

The band consists of a brother and sister duo Mark and Sare Lang with their childhood friends Chris Helm and Amanthi Lynth. Together they have received acclaim not only here in Australia, Skipping Girl Vinegar were offered a six figure sum to head overseas! iTunes Australia dubbed the band’s debut single One Chance as their Australian Single Of The Week.

You definitely should treat yourselves and listen to Skipping Girl Vinegar’s music on their Myspace, including their new single One Long Week which is amazing! The sound they have created is very cool indeed.

Here’s my interview with Mark Lang who’s the singer and guitarist of Skipping Girl Vinegar. A very big thankyou to Mark for taking the time to answer my questions and Will Alexander from Heapsaflash Music Media for making the interview possible.

1. Where did you get your name from?

Audrey, the Skipping Girl neon sign of Victoria St, is one of Melbourne's oldest and most loved icons - by us as much as anyone. We chose to step alongside this old-world pop icon with our Melbourne pop music. For the uninitiated, book your holiday down to Victoria St, Abbotsford and enjoy Audrey.

2. As brother and sister, what do you fight over the most?

Fight? Never. We are a picture of domestic harmony. Although when we are doing our long distance tour driving and Mark insists driving on the rumble strips along the side of the highway to massage our bottoms, he gets a stern talking to.

3. You must be proud remaining independent. Has being indie made you stronger as a band?

Our drummer, Chris, reckons there is no such thing as an independent band. Even if you don't hook up with a major label, every band still needs friends, supporters, producers, other musos, manager, agents, mentors, etc, around them to stay fresh and real. Staying indie from the majors has certainly made us work harder and our successes taste sweeter because we have worked for them. Stronger? Yeah, probably. Tired, too. But we're glad we've made the choices we have.

4. What’s in your iPods at the moment?

Mumford and Sons from UK, Asaf Avidan and the Mojos from Israel and The Staple Singers from the US.

5. What is it like to support big-named acts such as Something For Kate, Missy Higgins and Kate Miller-Heidke?

All of these artists, and other respected Australian and international artists that we have played alongside, have been a privilege to work with. Getting backstage and meeting the people behind the stage personas, we've had opportunities to get know them and learn from them as musos and performers. At the end of the day, people are people, and we've gotten to meet some tops ones.

6. Do you have any plans to bring out an album?

We have a brand new single, "One Long Week" coming out in Feb, produced with Nick Huggins and Greg Arnold, which we're really happy with. But we are strong believers in the concept of working in seasons. There is a season for writing, for touring, for recording... It was only at the end of 2009 that we finished the season of touring our debut album, Sift the Noise. So we're touring the east coast supporting the release of "One Long Week" through Feb and March and we hope to have the album released by late 2010 - but everything in its time.

7. Do you think the banjo gets a bad name?

What's in a reputation, eh? The banjo has solid self-esteem and doesn't tend to care what others think of it. Personally, we love the old banjo. Full of character and fun. Mind you, it's as much to do with the player as the instrument. Deliverance, anyone?

8. Where will Skipping Girl Vinegar be in 2010?

You can catch us touring through Sydney, Brisbane, Eumundi, Maitland and Canberra in February, and then launching our single in Melbourne and regional Victoria throughout March. Check out Skipping Girl Vinegar for full details.
