This Easter I decided to post my interview with the always delightful singer/songwriter Pamela Pachal!
Pamela was one of the first artists featured on Gigs ‘n Reviews over two years ago. (hasn’t time flown?) I’m glad to report Pamela is still writing and making music while having a great sense of humour. On her Myspace page you can hear her songs that are so personal and catchy. I personally like Love Song, which could be easily become a hit if Pamela ever ventures out to the big wide world.
You’ll see how Pamela doesn’t take herself and making music too seriously in the following interview! It was such a joy reading and editing this interview, so I hope you’ll enjoy it too!
1. What have you been up to in the last year? How was New York? Has the trip influenced your writing?
The last year I've been very busy playing shows, putting together a band, networking, and basically trying to make a name for myself on the East Coast of Canada. My trip to NYC was amazing! [I] met a ton of great musicians and had a blast at the awards show... it was a little overwhelming but I would do it again in a heartbeat! {smiles}
2. Cheating Bitch and Nasty Clothes have a bluesy feel to them. Do you like the blues?
I love the blues... I think every musician, no matter where they start, always ends up steering towards the blues when it comes to music. There's just something about the blues that's so real and true... it's like the one genre that will never disappoint you.
3. On your Myspace page you have a video showing you having fun performing Cheating Bitch. At your gigs do you have fun improvising?
{laughs} I always have fun improvising at gigs. That's the best part about playing live. It's also one of the biggest aspects that separates the 'great' from the 'good'.
4. Who remixed Butterfly?
It was actually me who remixed 'Butterfly'. I bought a loop pedal a while back and I started doing upbeat/dance versions of my songs at shows. I would just loop a bit of me beatboxing, then go from there.... I had so much fun I went to Melody Valley Productions and worked with Nate Ecker on the track. We started with me doing the beatboxing just how I would do it at shows and then added different synth samples and effects. Nate did a great job putting all the tracks together and adding effects... he actually ended up recording a bit of a drum beat as well. He's a great producer/engineer.
5. Lady GaGa. Genuis or freak?
{laughs} Hmmm..... I don't know, I like some of her songs, and I actually think she's a good musician... but it's really hard to say ‘cos you don't know how much of 'everything' is her or her record label. From what I've seen of her live(playing the keys) on YouTube I think I like her!
6. Do you think it’s important to have a sense of humour in the music business?
I think you definitely need a sense of humour in the music business.... You need a sense of humour in every business. If you don't have one then you're just going to be stressed all the time and end up going crazy... For example: Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, etc...
7. Can you tell my readers the story about your song about Peggy “Perfect”? It’s such a sweet story.
I worked in Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada with special needs adults and one of the adults I worked with was a 55 year old woman with Cri Du Chat (a very rare diagnosis). Her speech and motor skills were very limited but she LOVED music and absolutely loved the guitar. So when I started bringing my guitar into work I became one of her favourite people {laughs}. She actually started calling me 'A-Ding-A-Ding-A-Ding-A', {laughs again}. That meant 'the guitar girl'. She was such a beautiful person and one of the most purest souls I've ever met. She inspired me not only to write the song 'Peggy/perfect' but to also enjoy life more.... She just passed away two weeks ago.
My deepest condolences Pamela.
8. When do you write the most? Is it everyday?
My writing is very sporadic... it usually coincides with my personal life; {mocks herself and laughs} surprise, surprise. Sometimes I won't write for months and then sometimes I'll write 10 songs in 3 days.... I actually wrote 'Peggy' and 'Cheating Bitch' in the same week, there's a piece of scrap paper I used to scribble the lyrics that has 'Peggy' on 1 side, 'Cheating Bitch' on the other... {laughs}, I thought that was kinda cool when I pulled it out of my 'Song Box'.
9. Dillusional is a really great track. Have you tried getting it out there in the radio world?
I haven't really pushed any tracks for the radio... I'm very critical of myself and don't think my recorded versions of my songs are ready for radio yet. Next album though... they'll be ready! {winks}
10. Are you planning to release a follow-up to your debut album Chapter One?
Yes, I am getting ready to record Chapter 2. All the songs for Chapter 2 have been written for a very long time, I'm just waiting for some financial backing to get back into the studio... Last album was very low budget but this one...I'm going full out for! (and then I'll be ready for radio play) {winks}
Thankyou so much Pamela for your candid answers! I’m positive you’ve won a few more fans here in Australia!
